LightIron Digital designs and implements post production solutions for the motion picture industry. The company required a new 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Hollywood for color correction, seminars, and gatherings. Included are two screening rooms with 26 wide screens and custom built operator consoles for color correction, two smaller screening rooms, two edit bays, a lounge with kitchen and bar, offices, conference room, machine room, and tape vault.
The design of each screening room plays off the geometric forms of a digital projector's cone of projection.
Acoustical consulting was provided by Media Rooms Technology, Cobalt Blue Technology served as technical consultant, and custom consoles were provided by Purcell Productions.

In 1999, Jonathan Brier earned his BA in Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied under Christopher Alexander, author of A Pattern Language. Jonathan then worked with Alexander's architectural firm, where structural engineering and architecture are brought together under one roof. Jonathan went on to earn a Master of Architecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2004, and then joined the Rockwell Group, PC, in New York to work on the design of a two million square foot retail-entertainment complex. After relocating to Los Angeles, he worked with architectural firms on custom homes, retail and restaurant spaces, and schools. He is a mentor in the national ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentorship Program, and teaches architectural drafting at vocational schools in the L.A. metro area. Jonathan is committed to sustainable design practices and holds LEED AP accreditation from the United States Green Building Council.

Urban change
Bunker Hill is an area of downtown Los Angeles that experienced, under the banner of urban renewal in the 1960s, the replacement of a residential neighborhood with a new central business district. The erasure of the old community was complete, leaving few traces.
As an experiment in providing physical reminders of an urban site's past, this proposal inserts "interventions" into Bunker Hill's present street pattern. These interventions take the form of spatial environments that are experienced by drivers and pedestrians as they move through the area and or as they descend through layers of development that have been deposited over the natural ground plane. The interventions reference archaeological digs and geological processes, commenting on the transformation of urban space over time.

Townhomes
Located on the crest of a hill overlooking Silverlake and Glendale in Los Angeles and designed by Mass Architecture , t he Auburn 7 townhomes maximize the benefits of their site. Storefront glazing with operable sections, Nana Wall System glass doors, a semi-enclosed courtyard and an atrium below a skylight bring natural light, ventilation, and exceptional views to the interior of each unit. Auburn 7 also takes advantage of Los Angeles new Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance, which fosters increased density in the city by ending setback requirements between units. As a design associate at Mass Architecture, Jonathan Brier produced led the project through construction drawings and permitting.
The project was featured in the July/August 2010 issue of Dwell magazine.

Hillside house
This house was designed by Mass Architecture to allow views, light, and air to reach all areas of its interior. A primary concern of the owner was to have a visual and sensory connection with the surrounding landscape. Windows, doors, and porches behind the house allow air currents, which have been filtered through aromatic vegetation on the hillside above, to cross ventilate the house.
The upper levels are supported by a steel moment frame, which rests on a post-tensioned concrete deck, which spans from the poured-in-place concrete garage and studio to a rise in the hillside itself. This unusual structural solution reduces the need for obtrusive and expensive retaining walls and minimizes site disturbance.
As a design associate employed by Mass Architecture, Jonathan Brier produced construction drawings, permitting, conducted consultant coordination, and construction administration.
Cabin
The owner of a property in Sonoma County, California desired a cabin where guests to his retreat can enjoy the beauty of its wooded setting even while inside. A glazed roof and customized sliding glass wall panel system allow this to happen. Energy efficient glazing, frames, equipment, and construction make the structure title 24 compliant. Mechanical equipment and storage space are located in the cabins basement. As a design associate employed by Mass Architecture , Jonathan Brier generated construction drawings for the project.
Tea house
Mass Architecture provided a new interior, overhauled kitchen, custom furnishings, and graphic identity for this modern tea house in Los Angeles. A custom designed case suspended over the counter displays 100 varieties of tea. As a design associate employed by Mass, Jonathan Brier produced construction drawings, acquired the necessary permits and approvals and construction administration.
xanadu meadowlands
Rockwell Group, PC , served as the design architect for this retail-entertainment facility in the Meadowlands Sports Complex near New York City. The two million square foot project features entertainment elements such as a Ferris wheel, indoor ski slope, vertical wind tunnel for skydiving simulations, and three dimensional LED motion graphic screens. As a junior designer, Jonathan Brier's role within the Xanadu project team focused on the building's exterior and the integration of these entertainment features with the façade and interior spaces. I produced and coordinated construction documents, renderings, and presentation graphics for client meetings, and generated color and material studies for the exterior.
Fontana Adult School
Architecture for Education Inc . , modernized and converted an existing middle school campus to an Adult Education Center for the Fontana Unified School District by adding 160,000 square feet of new parking, new utilities including a new fire line and waste line, new signage, regrading, and doubling the size of an existing administration building with a new wing and conference room. Construction was phased to allow continuous use of the facility. Jonathan Brier produced construction drawings, coordinated consultant work, led permitting through the Division of the State Architect approval process, managed the public bid process and bid award, and interfaced with owner's representatives to ensure the District's needs were met.
Testronic Labs, the recognized global leader in Quality Assurance services for the digital media and entertainment industries, required a new facility for their Burbank, CA headquarters. Jonathan Brier Design provided complete architectural services, completing the project within budget and meeting a demanding schedule. The new facility includes acoustically isolated Quality Control bays and a screening room, server room, and an overhead cable distribution system connecting all rooms to the server room. This overhead system incorporates a sculpted lighting diffuser that hints at the complexity of the company's operations without disturbing the clean lines of the facility's design. Read the Testronic Labs press release here.
Acoustical consulting was provided by Media Rooms Technology, Cobalt Blue Technology served as technical consultant, and custom built consoles were provided by Purcell Productions.

Artists' co-op
The objective of the 2003 Detroit Charette was to attract members of the "creative class" to live in a former industrial zone along the city's riverfront. In this proposal, a complex of studio living units, shared facilities for artists (darkroom, carpentry shop, etc.), and retail space fosters a symbiotic relationship between public and private zones. A ground level courtyard invites the public to patronize retail spaces while residents benefit from increased visibility of their artistic practices. Other zones are semi-private (accessible to all residents but not the public) or private (accessible to individual residents only). Various uses falling along the public private spectrum are carefully integrated when advantageous and, when necessary, seperated for privacy and security.
Units are designed to accommodate tenants of various age groups, allowing residents to cycle through the complex as they age and their needs change. Residents have the option of establishing a permanent home.
A concentration of evening and late night uses is fostered along the Atwater St. frontage, keeping noise away from private zones. These round-the-clock uses bring to the neighborhood economic benefits and a safer night time environment.
